Entitled Anticraft, this craft how-to book broke all the conventions of book design and followed its own rules to appeal to an audience that may not otherwise be compelled to purchase such a publication.
Although this book was art directed and designed for the North Light Books imprint of F&W Publications, following its title, the concept was inspired by punk zines and the goth aesthetic. Sparse use of color and the use of found clip art emulate photocopied publications, while the outlandish photo direction, set in an abandoned building, complements the outlandish craft projects. Oversized page numbers and a seemingly inconsistent page grid further reinforce the “anti” ethos of the book.
My experience with designing this book is featured in 365 Habits of Successful Graphic Designers, published by Rockport Books.
